1978: The year of the Don

October 17, 2006
1978 was a special year. And not just because the world swayed to the feeling of Grease and spotted Superman in birds and planes.

Back home, 1978 saw the Angry Young Man fever gripping the country fervently as Amitabh Bachchan dished hit after hit in quick succession.

1978. When the reigning divas Rekha, Hema Malini, Reena Roy, Raakhee, Ranjeeta and Zeenat Aman vied for the numero uno slot.

1978. When art house aesthetics made their presence felt and budgets and banner got bigger and better.

1978. When bell-bottoms and big-collared shirts were the toast of fashion.

1978. When the Amitabh Bachchan-Zeenat Aman starrer, Don hit the screens. A non-starter initially, it made a speedy business recovery thanks to word-of-mouth publicity. The lure of Don's Benarasi paan attracted filmmaker Farhan Akhtar so much, that 28 years later, he is ready with an upgraded, hi-tech remake of the same. Can Don's new faces -- Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, carry this one off? October 20 holds the answer to that question.

While we know 2006 is extraordinary with films like Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, Krrish, Omkara, Gangster, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Dor and Khosla Ka Ghosla, the question is what was the filmi climate of 1978 like?

rediff.com refreshes your memory of 1978 and all its highs and lows.
