Malayalam cinema’s brush with politics
When it comes to politics, actors and technicians from the Malayalam film industry usually take a diplomatic stance, never confining themselves to a particular political outfit.
Of course, there have been exceptions like K B Ganesh Kumar, Murali or Lenin Rajendran.
So, it was a surprise when Innocent was fielded as a Left front candidate from Chalakudy during the last Lok Sabha elections. It was an even greater surprise when he won the tough battle.
Things have changed now as actors like Mukesh, Ganesh Kumar, Jagadeesh and Bheeman Raghu have become candidates in the Kerala state elections, to be held on May 16.
Suresh Gopi has just been nominated by the BJP as a Rajyasabha MP.
Actors like Jayaram, KPAC Lalitha, Salim Kumar and Kaviyoor Ponnamma campaigned for various political fronts recently.
Mammootty was also actively involved in some social gatherings not too long ago. This seems like the changing face of Malayalam cinema.
