The Chennai police have attributed Tamil film producer and financier G Venkateswaran's suicide on May 3 to his mounting debts.

Pending the forensic report, the police press release quoted the post-mortem report to confirm GV's death was a suicide.

It said GV's family members and office staff admitted he was facing severe financial problems for the last five years. A public sector bank had filed a case against him to recover his dues, attaching a 63-acre property that GV was hoping to sell to meet his commitments to private financiers.

There were no family problems, the release said. It denied reports that, just before his suicide, he had been threatened by those to whom he owed money. It also denied loan sharks had attempted to abduct his family when they were in Kodaikanal.
