Mammootty has touched a new low as far as his selection of roles is concerned in Rafi-Mecartin's latest Malayalam film Love in Singapore. Here he plays a a rags to riches scrap dealer Machu.
So, how does the plot unfold? Our man Machu, who started out as a rag picker, makes it big. He lives in a posh house in a posh locality and drives a fancy SUV. He desires to marry a beautiful girl, the ones you see in soap and talcum powder commercials (sic)! To fulfill his dream, he follows the advice of a neighbourhood business consultant Pereira (Nedumudi Venu), who suggests that he invest his earnings in stocks.
One fine day we come to know that Pereira has vanished to Singapore with Machu's money. In between, a lot of things happen like Machu sashaying down the catwalk in stylish getups with scores of gorgeous ladies surrounding him in a dream song. Machu proposes to marry Pereira's daughter Diana (Navaneet Kaur) as a compensation for his financial loss. In the second half Machu reaches Singapore and employs a few tricks to win Diana over.
Now, it is very difficult to understand why Mammootty accepts such roles that require less of acting and more of buffoonery. It has to do with something more than just proving his prowess in doing humorous roles.
In the beginning one may feel that Nedumudi Venu in a negative role may be a refreshing change. But, his presence here proves to be without any rhyme or reason. There is no convincing explanation for him to cheat Machu and fly off to Singapore. Unless, of course shooting in Singapore is a reason.
Even the script is illogical and consists of many 'laugh a minute' portions that have been put together to make this film. It can be said without a doubt that Love in Singapore is one of the worst efforts by the director duo Rafi-Mecartin in recent times.
