'As sisters we are never going to oppose Sanjay's decisions because we are all adults'

Sanjay and your husband Bunty have always been close. How have they managed to keep their friendship independent of the family connection? And has that ever posed a problem for you?

To be frank there are strains in that relationship too. How much ever Bunty and Sanjay would like to believe otherwise, they are not as good friends as they used to be. We have to accept that things happen, and people grow apart. I don't interfere in his [Bunty's] relationships and it has never affected my relationship with him.

Lastly, how do you think the last year will impact the future of your relationship with your brother? Or has it been permanently damaged?

I remember getting very upset with things that Sanjay did when our father was alive. Dad used to say that one shouldn't have any expectations from relationships, and that way one will not feel let down. But I can never subscribe to that idea.

I wish Sanjay was able to tell us about his decisions -- both good and bad. As sisters we are never going to oppose his decisions because we are all adults. The maximum we can do is advise him -- that he has to be responsible for his actions and not let the family bear the consequences. It's not that difficult to share things with your siblings. If Priya has to arrive at a big decision, I know for a fact that she will consult the family. Similarly, I'm not going to get my daughter married secretly. I will tell my family.

This last one year has been extremely strenuous but I hope things get better. And for that we just have to sit down and talk to each other.
