'The actual Devdas is quite melodramatic'
Deol could easily identify with the character of Dev, given that he was raised in a similar setting. But after reading the translated version of the novel and studying the nuances of the character, Deol found some things he had to work on.
The novella Chatterjee wrote in 1901 is still relevant today under same circumstances but with modern settings, he says.
Deol says he chose to block out the fact that the movie was made and that the character has been played before. He treated this as an original movie with contemporary characters. "The actual Devdas is quite melodramatic. I wanted to play that down in this movie," said Deol.
