'As we worked, I would suddenly see dead bodies popping out of the water'

How many months were you in Kasi?

We were there for two and a half months. The whole place is spiritual and very disturbing too. If you live on the banks of the river Ganges, you will realise the value of life. Every day, I saw at least 20-30 dead bodies being burnt there. As we worked, I would suddenly see dead bodies popping out of the water. That is when you realise the futility of life.

We also shot the film at Allahabad when the Kumbh Mela was taking place. It was an experience by itself, being in the middle of so many people. All of us stayed in a tent as there were no hotels nearby.

How much did working in Naan Kadavul change you as a person?

When I was there, I forgot that I had a home in Chennai. I called home only twice. I was totally detached from worldly life.

How is it like to be back from the world of a sanyasi to the world of films, a world of maya?

To tell you the truth, I felt bad about removing my beard and long hair after two years. But life has to go on. I was happy then and now too as I am not a very materialistic person.
