Shabana Azmi was born in New Delhi on September 18, 1950, to poet Kaifi and actress Shaukat Azmi. Winner of an astonishing five National Awards for Best Actress, she is now recognised the world over as an accomplished artiste.
A graduate of St Xavier's College, Mumbai, Shabana completed an acting course at Pune's Film and Television Institute of India before embarking on her film career. Her first big screen appearance came with Shyam Benegal's Ankur in 1972, which won a National Award. She went on to win three more from 1983 to 1985 for Arth, Khandhar and Paar. In 1996, her role in Deepa Mehta's Fire won her the Silver Hugo Award for Best Actress at the Chicago Film Festival.
What Shabana is equally recognised for, in India, is her untiring support for social causes. We hope to see a lot more of her in the years to come, both on screen and off.
