Rave reviews for The Pool

Working with the younger artists provided delight and challenges, Smith recalls.

"The kids got better and better with each day's work," he explains. "The kids could not read, and that meant we had to rehearse with them the day of the shooting. Though they received the instruction in Hindi through an interpreter, they had to use their imagination in knowing what was said. The film was shot in Hindi but it was not their first language."

The film has received many excellent reviews. 'A triumph, this! (A) gentle, muted drama. Genuine old-school humanism,' declared Time Out NY.

Stanley Kauffmann, one of the most influential critics wrote in The New Republic praising not only the film but also Nana Patekar: 'A kind of counter-film which sets expectations in an environment that supports unexpected results... (with) two seamless performances. Nana Patekar... is an eminence in Indian film and has commanding ease. His extensive talents shine.'
