In Ghajini the actor got to play the role of a lifetime as Sanjay Ramaswami, a successful entrepreneur who falls for a vivacious model Kalpana, and embarks on an orgy of revenge after she is murdered.
The character suffered from short-term memory loss, something hitherto unseen in Tamil cinema. Surya's excellent chemistry with beautiful Asin worked, as did Harris Jeyaraj's songs and the screenplay.
Needless to say, Surya won the Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Actor.
