Naturally, when Newsweek magazine, in a 2002 cover story, declared that M Night Shyamalan was possibly the next Steven Spielberg, all hell broke loose.
For film buffs, the article approached sacrilege. 'What has Shyamalan truly accomplished, besides a couple decent flicks?' they asked in caustic letters, lampooning author and editor alike. 'Does his resume boast anything like Jaws, Close Encounters Of The 3rd Kind, Indiana Jones, ET, The Colour Purple, Empire Of The Sun, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, Artificial Intelligence, Minority Report and so on?'
Because, to those in the know, there seems only one Mr Blockbuster: Steven Spielberg, left. And his next film may just be produced by India's own Reliance.
