When once was not enough

Kamal Haasan in Dasavathaaram (2008)

With Dasavathaaram, Kamal Haasan goes one up on Sivaji Ganesan. The movie showcases the veteran actor in 10 different roles and is essentially an attempt to make 'different' cinema.

Haasan, the actor, is an enigma. He has the knack of featuring in projects bordering on the bizarre, as well as breaking existing norms and venturing into territories hitherto unventured.

Dasavathaaram is also an experiment. On the positive side, it is an attempt at achieving something unique -- a journey across the globe, across time spans and at times, across human imagination.

Haasan appears as a biotechnologist, an ex-CIA officer, a Japanese martial arts expert, an intelligence officer, a Punjabi singer, a mentally challenged woman, a Dalit, a Vaishnavite in the Chola empire of the 12th century, a Muslim and finally, US president George Bush.

On the negative side, the film is an exercise in self-indulgence. What viewers ultimately get to see is Kamal Haasan, the actor, and not Dasavathaaram, the film.

Himesh Reshammiya makes his debut as a music composer in Tamil cinema with this effort.
