Honey Irani
Her resume is good enough to make an aspiring writer, a sycophant. And her pen has launched quite a few careers -- Aishwarya Rai, Preity Zinta, Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha, to name a few. Therefore, it was ironical that when it came to launching her own career as a director, the ink in her pen dried up.
Irani's Armaan (2003) had everything going for it -- an ensemble cast, good cinematography, music and songs (courtesy ex-hubby Javed Akhtar). What it lacked was a coherent script.
For someone whose career got airborne post Yash Chopra's Lamhe (1991), Irani went further up with films like Aaina (1993), Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai (1998), Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai and Kya Kehna (both 2000).
There were times when she had to stop and refuel after efforts like Parampara (1993), Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya (1997) and Albela (2001). But she largely had a successful flight.
Armaan, however, forced an emergency landing. The failure was palpably hard to digest but Honey did comeback well, and in something she was good at, writing. She made significant contributions to two of the biggest blockbusters in this decade -- Koi Mil Gaya (2003) and Krrish (2006).
But the failure of her maiden venture proved that writers, no matter how skilful they are, don't always make good directors.
