Shyam Benegal's Zubeidaa, penned by movie critic Khalid Mohammed, traces the ups and downs of its titular heroine and her brief life.
From a wannabe actress to a young single mom to a Rajasthani queen, Zubeidaa witnesses a sea of changes. Initially, marrying into aristocracy seems like a whole lot of fun. Soon enough, however, palace decorum and Maharaja's first wife, Mandira Devi appear to threaten the young and restless Zubeidaa.
To Karisma Kapoor's credit, the blue-eyed star delivers a career best act with her superbly nuanced and sensitive portrayal.
