How did it change your life?
You know I am perhaps the only actress who has worked in films made in Mumbai but lives in Delhi. I work as my own secretary. And if I have not gone after the commercial films, it is not because I look down on them. It is because I have never been part of them, even as an audience, and I just do not understand that world.
But you acted in Aks opposite Amitabh Bachchan.
It wasn't going to be a typical commercial film and it did not become one. And there wasn't one line of dialogue in that film, one little scene that I had to defend. If I have appeared in a commercial film or two, I did so without having much insight how that industry works.
And that is why I haven't been seen in mainstream films. I have been extraordinarily lucky to have worked with directors such as Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, Deepa Mehta, Santosh Sivan and Mani Ratnam.
What are some of the things you learned while making Firaaq?
One of the key things I always kept in mind is that whether you make an independent film or a commercial film with songs and dances, the producer of the film wants to see the investment returned at the end of the day. It is a big responsibility for every director to keep in mind and execute it making sure that he or she has done a decent job.
