Adayalangal presents a socio-political attitude about the futility of war. This, according to Sasi, was a reality experienced by young men all over the world, who had to fight as mercenaries in the Second World War.
The film has a theme which cuts across time, with the youngsters relating to the emotions of the protagonist, Gopi, a 36-year old soldier who is forced to kill his enemy lest they kill him.
Adayalangal pays homage to the memory of Nandanar, who always had a lust for life but decided to kill himself later on.
As the director puts it, "when Adayalangal recreates Kerala's rural life with its natural scenes, language and the people, it truly bears the imprints of life, beyond the times and regions."
