Joel and Ethan Coen's Blood Simple (1984)
The term 'Blood Simple' apparently refers to a murderer's state of fear and confusion after the act. I love the movie. It's nasty and funny.
The Coen Brothers' first film proves Roger Corman's theory that 'the budget is the aesthetic.' Low on budget, but high on writing, style and performances.
Note the sound fx and the edgy camerawork. Thrillers offer you so much scope to play with the medium. This is film noir, black comedy and a love story, all rolled into one.
