'I never encountered any unpleasantness from Sanjayji'

You were signed on for Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani. Then how did Saawariya happen?

The first time I worked with Sanjayji was in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. I played the keyboard and he loved a few things that I did. So he asked me to arrange a few tracks in the film. I handled the complete background score of the songs. He was very happy with my work and offered me Devdas.

I was skeptical because I didn't know what it would be like. Moreover, I wanted credit for my hard work. I didn't wish to arrange for Ismail Darbar or anyone else because I had crossed that level. So I told Sanjayji I'll do the background only I get credited in the film. He agreed.

Likewise, Bajirao Mastani came along. Due to some reasons, it didn't materialise so we shifted to Black, followed by Saawariya.

Tell us about the music of Saawariya.

Saawariya is a young, contemporary love story. So is the music. I've tried to keep my songs as simple as possible so that they are hummable and easy to catch. I have orchestrated all my songs in different beats. I've got back the string sections which have been missing for quite some time. I've got back the shehnai, bulbul tarang and banjos, which have almost become extinct. We have used some glass sounds, acoustic percussions like tumbas and congas. So the entire approach is very fresh and unique. The music will appeal to the classes as well as masses.

Saawariya happened the way I had envisioned it. It caters to the heart, body and soul. The music is melodious and soulful. Saawariya has been an enriching experience because everything about Sanjayji is larger than life. And to be a part of that is every artiste's dream come true.

There have been reports of Bhansali's high handed behaviour with the cast and crew.

I just believe in delivering my best. At no point was I insecure or uncertain about anything. I believe in hard work and God. Sanjayji, as the world knows, is a perfectionist. As far as I am concerned, I never encountered any unpleasantness from his side. Our rapport was such that he never lost his cool with me. There's a great level of understanding between us. And if you're good at your work, I don't see any scope for this.
