There were no takers for director Nagesh Kuknoor's Iqbal because the protagnoist, Iqbal, was mute by birth. Finally, Subhash Ghai's Mukta Arts agreed to produce the film with Naseeruddin Shah playing a cricket coach battling alcoholism.
His meeting with Iqbal (Shreyas Talpade), however, changes his life.
