He played Ron Kovic, a paraplegic Vietnam vet-turned-antiwar activist who expresses his resentment against the country he fought for.
The director, Oliver Stone (a war veteran himself), co-wrote screenplay for the film adaptation of the autobiography of the same name by Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic.
