It's been a relatively underwhelming summer for Hollywood, with major-draw franchise characters like Spider-Man and Jack Sparrow not quite meeting expectations.
As the year winds to a close, we are left with an interesting set of films to look forward to, films squeezed into 2007 to qualify for the Oscar shortlist next year.
Here's a brief taste of things to come:
Beowulf:
Based on the epic Anglo-Saxon war poem, Beowulf is a thrilling script, worked on by cult fantasy writer Neil Gaiman and Pulp Fiction co-writer Roger Avary. Deeply immersed in the 8th Century heroic poem, the writers have made significant departures in their attempt to explore subtext.
The film is directed by Robert Zemeckis, and uses a surreal new motion capture technology -- while we remain unconvinced as to the use of this for the whole film, the fact that this treatment lets us see a virtually naked Angelina Jolie is rather spectacular.
