Unlike Rishi who was launched by his father, Rajiv Kapoor was launched by Rajiv Mehra in Ek Jaan Hai Hum (1983). Though the film did not do well, the songs became very popular.

His second film, Aasman (1984), also did not do well.

When he saw that his son's career was not taking off, Raj Kapoor re-launched him in Ram Teri Ganga Maili. That was Rajiv's only hit in his entire career.
