All you need to know about 50 Cent

Rise to fame

Relieved to be living at all, the post-recovery 50 Cent dedicated himself to hip-hop. Ironically, the attack that almost cost him his life gave him the street credibility necessary to be a successful gangster rapper. He frequently referenced the shooting in songs, stating that his ability to withstand nine shots made him bullet proof.

In 2002, rapper Eminem heard a mixtape of the brash, emerging artist, and introduced him to legendary producer Dr Dre. Dre, the head of Aftermath records, signed 50 Cent to a Rs 40 million deal and the duo immediately began working together.

After appearing a number of songs for Eminem's 8 Mile soundtrack, the buzz surrounding 50 Cent became fever-pitched. His debut album, Get Rich or Die Tryin', was considered the most anticipated rap album in over a decade.

It did not disappoint.

Propelled by the flagship song, In Da Club, Get Rich or Die Tryin' was an immediate success, selling one million copies in the first week alone. The album was noted for its marriage of pulsing club beats with gritty, street life-inspired lyrics. It has sold over 12 million copies worldwide.

His second album, The Massacre, achieved similar success. This album featured more club-inspired music, such as hit singles, Candy Shop, Just a Lil Bit and Disco Inferno. It has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.
