Bollywood's southern connection

They may sizzle in Bollywood films today but there a few heroines who, early on in their career, crossed the Vindhyas to go south.

Here are a few who have come from the Bollywood's southern connection.

Aishwarya Rai

Crowned Miss World in 1994, she could have signed on any Hindi film but chose Mani Ratnam's offbeat Tamil film Iruvar to debut in 1997.

The film was based on the lives of Tamil politicians M G Ramachandran, M Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa, and Rai played Jayalalitha.

Playing the hero MGR, the uncrowned King of Tamil films and politics, was the Malayalam superstar Mohanlal. Though Iruvar is considered as one of the best films of Mani Ratnam, it was not a commercial success.
