NY welcomes The Namesake

First to walk on the red carpet were the Lahiris, Amar and Tia, parents of the Pulitzer Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri (far left). The couple, who live in Rhode Island, came with their other daughter. "All of us are so happy for Jhumpa," Tia Lahiri said. "This is a very moving film. I have seen it before, but now we are seeing it with a very large audience."

Jhumpa Lahiri, who wore a dark churidar with a light green dupatta, was anything but her usual reticent self. She even showed great enthusiasm tackling the usual question, whether the book is faithful to her novel. She declared Mira Nair had taken the best parts of her book, and captured its spirit.

"I could not have received a better gift from Mira," she said. "This film will always be very special to my entire family." Many of her relatives make fleeting appearances in the film. Jhumpa herself is there for a few seconds; she is billed as Jhumpa Mashi, and her baby daughter Noor Lahiri Vourvoulias is the little Sonia in the film.
