A cut above the rest

The movie: Pyaar Ka Side Effects

The director: Saket Choudhary, 32

I am from Delhi. After graduating in Physics, I did my masters in Mass Communications where I learnt filmmaking and television. Actually, when I was in college I was more into theatre, so I thought of taking Mass Communication. I made ad films for a year, then came to Mumbai. I started writing for a TV show, Movers and Shakers. I loved writing and soon I became the head writer. From thereon, I started assisting director Aziz Mirza and met Santosh Sivan, who was doing the cinematography. He asked me whether I could write Asoka. Thus Asoka was my first feature film as a writer.

The struggling years: Asoka did not do too well, and so there was a lull in my career. During this time I wrote Pyaar Ka Side Effects. I had spoken to Rahul Bose about the movie and he had agreed to do it. But I did not find a producer, though many liked the script. I wasted 2 years on this, when Rahul suggested I meet with Pritish Nandy Communications. The rest was history.

Why it worked? I think the narrative style was excellent.

If he could change something... Change Mallika Sherawat's role in the second half, because the audience got to see very little chemistry between the two.

Was success expected? Not really. I thought it would do reasonably well and producers would think about giving me one more chance.

What next? Next I am doing Shaadi Ke Side Effects for PNC. The cast could be the same, or we would decide on altogether a new one. Nothing has been finalised yet. I have couple of stories, which I have yet to decide.
