In 2002, Nicole was made to look almost unrecognizable as writer Virginia Woolf in The Hours. The role, for which she was forced to wear a prosthetic nose, won her the Academy award, the BAFTA award and the Golden Globe.
Performances in Lars Von Trier's Dogville and Anthony Minghella's Cold Mountain followed in 2003. The actress received yet another Academy Award nomination for Cold Mountain, but the award went to her co-star Renée Zellweger.
Rumours of a romance between Kidman and Jude Law on the sets of Cold Mountain were denied, and she dated musician Lenny Kravitz for a period until 2004.
