In Goblet of Fire, the first seeds of a more 'adult' series are sown. Harry grows more confident, falls in love (or so he thinks, like all first crushes), Hermione and Ron begin to realise that what they feel for each other is more than just friendship.
Equally importantly, Voldemort regains his human form. And he overcomes the magic that had so far prevented him from being able to touch Harry.
Filled with delightful little nuggets that you are sure lead up to larger significance as the series progresses, Goblet of Fire is a toe-crusher of a book (it's that thick), but is an engrossing read from the start to the finish.
