Harry is back at Hogwarts, but there has been a breakout from Azkaban, the wizard prison. A murderous wizard called Sirius Black is at large, and everyone believes Black wants nothing more than to kill Harry.
Harry's first brush with dementors -- hooded, evil, dark creatures who serve as Azkaban guards -- happens on the train to Hogwarts.
It's also on the train that he meets the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor R J Lupin, a key character.
Meanwhile, Hagrid has become a Hogwarts teacher - and his subject is care of magical creatures.
