Mammootty made his presence felt in the out and out commercial film Mayavi, directed by Shafi. He rarely came on screen to batter erring thugs to pulp, but his shadows were enough to underline his magical presence in the film.

Mayavi also helped Shafi in keeping up his impressive track record of making successive hits intact. Gopika was the heroine, while Manoj K Jayan starred as the baddie.
