Letters From Iwo Jima
While Clint Eastwood's World War II drama the $90 million Flags of Our Fathers got very good reviews, it was a box-office disappointment. His companion film Letters cost just about $20 m. But the film, made in Japanese, and looking at the American-Japanese war from the perspective of the defeated, is more powerful and intriguing than Flags.
Ken Watanabe is magnetic enough to earn an Oscar nomination. There is plenty of violence, gore and gloom, but there is also meditation about the futility of war.
