When Zeppelin ruled the world

Sometime in early 2007, the Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, announced plans to build a 155-feet tall roller coaster. Set to open in 2008, it will feature six inversions, and a spiral over a lagoon. What makes it unusual, however, is the premise behind its working. Called 'Led Zeppelin: The Ride', the roller coaster will be synchronised to the music of Led Zeppelin's infectious, unforgettable track, Whole Lotta Love. That it will be a winner is a foregone conclusion.

As the surviving members of Led Zeppelin take to the stage at The O2 in London, on December 10, 2007, the image of a rollercoaster moving to their music seems rather apt. It encapsulates perfectly the band’s trials, its decade of world dominion, its loops and falls. And, through it all, its magnificent, primal music.

Going by news reports, promoters of the December 10 show predicted the gig would cause the 'largest demand for one show in history.' That there was little exaggeration in that statement was made obvious when one million people registered for 20,000 available tickets.
