Vikram comes to Mumbai

Interestingly, all his future releases are with directors who have given offbeat hits lately. Then there is Bala -- who gave him his break with Sethu, helmed Pithamagan, and who Vikram calls an extension of his own self. "After Sethu, for a long time he (Bala) didn't get a script I could fit into. Someone asked him what he would do if he cast me in his next movie. He said, 'I'll make him an animal'. Which is what he did in Pithamagan."

It is while working on Pithamagan that reports of a major rift between the two surfaced. Looking back, Vikram reflects, "There were fights, misunderstandings between us, as with all friends. The only thing is, by the time word got to the papers, we would be friends again. When the papers said we had patched up, we would start a fight again. Bala and I are friends first, professionals later." Laughing, he adds, "And he is the bad guy! The one who picks the fights."

If his bond with Bala transcends the creator-muse relationship, it is just an extension of the bond he shares with his father, Vinod. "We share a great relationship. He ran away from home to act, and I would have done the same thing. It's in the genes," he laughs. Vinod is also possibly Vikram's biggest critic. "I did a cop film called Kaaval Geetham, which flopped. It was supposed to be an action film and turned into a comedy. My father saw it and told me never to play a cop again!"
