Rukmini Krishnan: Dressing up the stars
Rukmini Krishnan designs costumes for period films -- something she turned to after many years as an interior designer. Her flair for design, and the mixing and matching of colours, made the transition easy for her.
After assisting Sarika in designing clothes for Hey Ram, Rukmini's first solo effort was Agnivarsha, the Hindi film based on Girish Karnad's play (Fire and the Rain) directed by Arjun Sajnani. Her most recent effort was the styling of Nagarjuna in the Telugu super hit Sree Ramadasu. Now a grandmother, Rukmini still takes her job seriously, spending days on the sets of her assignments.
"I love doing period films," she says. "I have been offered work for mainstream films but do not want to take them up now. I am comfortable doing period films, where I spend time on research and work according to the need of the characters and the film. It is definitely more challenging. A lot of creativity is involved in reproducing that kind of cloth, colour and design required in a costume. I am happy to do one film a year and give it everything."
