5. Margo Channing
Bette Davis in All About Eve

In 1950, Joseph Mankiewicz wrote and directed this fine drama about an aspiring actress manipulating her way to a showbiz high. Anne Baxter plays the titular Eve, and Marilyn Monroe also stars.

The gorgeous Davis plays Margo Channing, a vain, ageing movie star. Fame is a cruel mistress, a truth emphatically reflected in the character's eyes, as her successful world crumbles to dust, merely by the passing of age.

With raw contempt and bitter disillusionment, Davis plays the role of a lifetime to absolute, painful perfection.
