Meet Superman's arch enemy
You took a break from the Old Vic to do this role...
I took a break from Philadelphia Story for six weeks to come and work on this, and Bryan was a man of his word, literally -- he promised me he would work me to the very last day, and he did. I think we finished at 8.45 on a Friday night, and I was on a 10.15 plane back to London, and on stage the next night.
You have your own production company involved in a handful of projects, a web site where you seek out fresh talent, a demanding job at the Old Vic, you act and direct -- where do you find the time?
It is challenging, but I have incredible staff at the Old Vic and at TriggerStreet, so it's not like I do it alone. I delegate a great deal, and I have very good people who help keep me on top of stuff. I love the challenge.
Was shooting for Superman tough?
There was nothing tough about doing it; it was just a terrible joy. Even being in Australia was wonderful, and Sydney is such a great city.

The question actually related to the size and scope of this film.
I haven't done many big budget movies -- I have done more independent movies. I remember walking on the sets and thinking how huge these sets were. You feel a little dwarfed, but it's the nature of the beast, and for me to see that Bryan is the same he was ten years ago was a joy; it is just that he has more tools, more toys -- he is as much a filmmaker and sees the movie in his head, I think he has a little editor in there, he can describe a scene for you so clearly that I feel I am in hands I can trust.
You found Bryan Singer the same as he was ten years ago, but that time was seminal for you too. Are you still the same?
I hope he will say so. I hope that, despite all the things that have happened since then, I have remained essentially the same.
