6. Fantasia
One of Walt Disney's personally most cherished projects, this magical 1940 film was made with a very specific aim: introduce young audiences to the classical music canon while pushing the boundaries of animation. The result: an inconceivably brilliant marriage of high-art and classical symphony.
Bach, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Stravinsky all featured, with Stravinsky even offering to compose fresh material for the film.
Uncle Walt originally wanted to re-release the film every year, adding in new classical segments. Plans were made to include Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries and Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee, but this was dismissed as too ambitious a notion.
By the by, the Sorcerer in the film is named Yen Sid, which is a certain genius spelt backwards.
