One of Hollywood's best leading men of all time, this summer sees him star in a sequel to a unapologetically juvenile pirate film. But Depp is all about the contradictions, and while his portrayal of the Earl of Rochester in The Libertine might not have clicked, his Tim Burton-led reimagining of the Roald Dahl character was nothing short of magical.

Who else is there: It's an interesting list, with Pierce Brosnan trying to whimsically move out of 007-mode with The Matador; and Joaquin Phoenix dependably managing to play Johnny Cash in Walk The Line. But Depp's biggest foe is Nathan Lane, the hilarious man who makes The Producers really work.
