Rediff Reviewer's Top Five in 2006

Omkara

Could you have said the standard, theek-hai-ek-baar-dekh-sakte-hain comment about Omkara?

Definitely not. You either loved this adaptation of Othello. Or hated it.

Ajay Devgan (Omi) is the leader of a gang. He nominates Kesu (Vivek Oberoi) to take his spot in the gang when he moves to politics. That shatters Langda Tyagi's (Saif Ali Khan) aspirations of succeeding Omi.

Omkara demonstrates that a man's hatred creates an inferno that burns all and leaves a trail of destruction that finally consumes even its perpetrator.

Saif was brilliant as the scheming Langda Tyagi who attempts to build a web of deceit and instigates Omi to examine his lover Dolly's (Kareena Kapoor) fidelity while questioning her friendship with Kesu.

Omi realises he has been duped. But Langda's fate is sealed when wife Indu (Konkona Sen Sharma) -- the only person who really loves him -- realises that he has used even her in his nefarious scheme.

So many reasons can be given for Omkara's failure at the box office -- like the use of a local dialect that prevented audiences from understanding the extremely dark nature of the plot.

But the sterling performances and Vishal Bharadwaj's superb direction are a very strong reason to see this movie!
