Ek, Do, Teen...
Bollywood's extra-marital affairs

August 9, 2006
The Blackmailers

In one of her best performances, Mala Sinha plays a woman caught between duty and desire. Married to her late sister's husband (Ashok Kumar), she is tempted to be with her younger, better-looking, one-time love (Sunil Dutt).

Lusting married women are a strict no-no in our films. And that is when a blackmailer pops up in the script to put brakes on the affair. Something to that effect happened in B R Chopra's Gumrah. The audiences lapped up this relatively bold move.

Kareena Kapoor must have hoped that her reprisal of Sinha's role in Dharmesh Darshan's remake Bewafaa would meet the same fate. Alas, the film turned out to be a lemon at the box office.
