Showkath says, "There was no Muslim fundamentalism or extremism in Kerala, but with men going to the countries in the Persian Gulf and to other parts of India, everything has changed. They come back and tell me 'Kerala Muslims' do not know the pains Muslims in the other parts of India go through. They want Kerala Muslims to come out and understand the true identity of the Muslims all over the world."
It took four years for Showkath to convert his fears into cinema. And he went about it completely hush-hush. "I knew there would be a lot of protests. When I made my first film (Patam Onnu Oru Vilapam) attacking a disease that was eating the Muslim community, I faced the same problem."

Patam Onnu Oru Vilapam was a landmark in Malayalam cinema because it dealt with a burning issue: of young Muslim girls being forcibly married off to very old men. Showkath wrote the story, the screenplay and produced the film.
He got flak from community conservatives but the film won awards at home and abroad. Meera Jasmine, who played the protagonist, won a National Award last year.
