Special: Oscars 2005
Win like Clint
Million Dollar Baby

Clint's latest triumph deals with the traditional Hollywood metaphor of the boxing ring as life, and delves bravely into some deep emotional territory, running through death, loneliness, and self-awareness. All without losing a bit of it's smooth flow.

Clint plays Frankie Dunn, owner of a ramshackle boxing gym populated usually by lowlife losers who he trains. One day a spunky young woman wants him to train her, and Frankie shafts her with his 'bigger' sights set on a prizefighter. But the fighter leaves the old manager, and a rejected Frankie finally gives in to her tutorial pleas.

The film, a directorial achievement of monumental proportions, is also being hailed as possibly Clint's finest acting performance. The grizzled veteran comes across with unbelievable energy and dedication, and his talent shines in a role he has crafted perfectly for his actor self.

Clint quote of the film: 'You wouldn't start training to be a ballerina at 31 now, would you?'

[Maggie Fitzgerald: Already been workin' it for three years.]

Frankie Dunn: 'And you can't hit a speed bag? What kind of training is that?'

[Maggie Fitzgerald: I never had any, boss.]

Frankie Dunn: 'Well, I hate to say it, but it shows.'
