Preity Zinta

I met Preity at a party.

When I saw her I said, "we're on."

She came to my studio with a backpacker with clothes just stuffed into it. I asked her, "How are you carrying your clothes?"

"That's the way I am," she said.

She carried short dungarees, and cute clothes in one bag.

This was much before her Liril and Perk ads. She was the highly educated girl from Shimla who came to Mumbai with a dream.

I asked my makeup artists Doris and Bharat (Godambe) to check this amazing new girl. I was very excited. I didn't want much make-up.

I wanted to capture her raw look.

Her pictures were sent to Mani Ratnam and she was on [for Dil Se].

Preity is a livewire. Lot of noise. Lots of fun. She is one person who looks good when she talks, so I try to capture that mood.

I have done many superhit covers with Preity. I go for the bubbly look with her.

In this photo, I poured some water on her (laughs). I didn't want the glamour look; I wanted a natural look. She was screaming and having fun.

At first, she didn't think it would work but later she decided to give it a shot. She was shivering when I took this picture. The water was very cold. But I got a great snap and Preity really liked it.
