It was an entirely performance-based scene. We shot at Water's Edge in Long Island. I knew it was a very critical scene. It is quite close to the scene in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, where Kajol is coming to tell Shah Rukh she loves him. And SRK tells her he loves Rani Mukerji.

We just gave them [Saif and Preity] the lines. They were fantastic. Saif did the whole gesture of putting his thumbs out brilliantly. I edited out the end of that particular scene. After she leaves, the violinists continue playing and Saif says, "Please stop." He took such a long pause before saying it that I couldn't retain it. It is there in the deleted scenes of the Kal Ho Naa Ho DVD.
