Preity Zinta in Kya Kehna!

Her predicament is one of the oldest faced by Hindi film's female denizens. But Preity Zinta in Kya Kehna! goes about dealing with it in a revolutionary way. In this Kundan Shah film, college girl Preity yields to the suspect charms of fellow student Saif Khan and becomes pregnant.

Unlike the lamenting ladies of innumerable films from the Sixties (think Sharmila in Aradhana or Mala Sinha in Aasra), a determined Preity unapologetically refuses to see this as the end of her young life. Instead, she goes about rebuilding her life.

But while a Naina Sahu in 1967's Hare Kaanch Ki Chudiya also intrepidly did just that, Preity also refuses to marry the father of her baby when he finally does show up. Preity's passage to maturity is complete when she turns down Saif's proposal and opts for her longtime admirer Mr Dependable Chandrachur Singh. This decision gives this Honey Irani-written film a final fillip.
