The Broadway edition, which has undergone quite a few changes from the London show, will look different from the West End production. But it has many of its key characters: a rich young woman in Bollywood who guides the destiny of Akash, the Bollywood-bound young man; Rani, the seductress; colourful characters in the Mumbai slums, and Sweetie, the hijra.

"The current production is paying more attention to Akash's journey," Pimlott says. "The emphasis is on what he learns when he becomes famous and how his soul is affected."

The journey Akash undergoes has universal resonance, Pimlott says, adding that people from various cultures will be able to identify with him and his inner struggles.
