thought they would go ahead with another choreographer and that I’d lost my chance. But they had to re-record a song and the shoot had been postponed. I heard that Mr Bachchan was trying to trace me for this film. And I was like, what have I done to achieve this? I rushed back to Mumbai to meet him.
I had grown up watching Mr Bachchan’s films but I did not refer to them. I wanted to present him the way I saw him today. He loved the movements I gave him in the songs.
I developed a great rapport with him as the film progressed. I remember he was petrified for the Holi song. As soon as he reached the sets, he called me to his van. I assured him that I would treat it like a home video and wouldn’t make him dance too much. He was so relieved! I like to give my artistes some space so that they can do their own thing too.
Hemaji was a treat to work with. My grandfather had choreographed her in her first film, Sapon Ka Saudagar and lots more. He had also trained her. She used to be petrified of him! In Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, I trained her daughter! She knew me since then, as I would go to their house often.
Hemaji has a lovely smile. She would constantly blush and ask me, "What are you making me do? I’m so old." But when she saw the final cut, she was amazed. She had even brought Esha along.
Even though Hemaji is a dancer herself, she never offered any dance steps. She knew I was a classical dancer, and we come from the same school of dance.
