Virumaandi is the story of Virumaandi (played by Kamal Haasan) who spent his early years in Chinnakkolarpatti in Theni district. He was shipped off to Singapore by his father.

But Virumaandi, in an effort to protect his friend, takes the rap for a crime he did not commit. A few whip lashes and he was back in his village. There, he has only one emotional anchor, his old paternal grandmother, Supputhai.
