These days, filmmakers go out of their way to make each scene look like a painting as in Devdas. How did you go about the whole thing?
Owais: As a painter, I cannot handle a perfect scene. When everything is perfect, I itch to make one thing out of line, to add character to a scene.
As a filmmaker I know the reason why a certain thing is a certain way. Also, as a painter, I can allow a colour to mix with another, and create a new one -- an energy all of its own.
But as a filmmaker, I know that there can be no 'accidents' of that nature and that the character has to follow a certain path and these are the consequences. Things are more structured in a way.
