Deepa Gahlot

The Hindi film industry -- like Hollywood -- has been more of a Boy's Club, with women being kept out of positions of power. There are hardly any women producers, directors and technicians.

We make about a 100 (or more) Hindi films a year, and women do not get even five per cent of the pie.

That picture seems to be changing slowly, with more women getting into the business side of moviemaking. They are no longer just as actresses, singers, costume designers, choreographers, extras and hairdressers.

Ekta Kapoor, of course, has shown the industry what woman power is all about, though her films don't do half as well as her television serials.

Others women are following suit. It looks like the path cleared by pioneers like Sai Paranjpye, Vijaya Mehta, Aparna Sen, Kalpana Lajmi, Aruna Raje, and followed by Pamela Rooks, Tanuja Chandra, Reema Rakeshnath and Shrabani Deodhar is now being further explored by a whole lot of women getting their hands on the business of making films.

A quick look at the dozen or so women whose work one is looking forward to:

Raveena Tandon, producer
This actress has grown in stature almost overnight with strong roles in films like Satta. More important, she is getting into film production with Stumped and Pehchaan. Two more films are in the pipeline. Nobody would dare offer her an 'item' number now.

Manisha Koirala, producer
Her acting career may be floundering, but Manisha has gone seriously into production, with Paisa Vasool and a couple of other films in the making. With some discipline and planning, there is no reason why this intelligent actress should not turn into a successful businesswoman.

Pooja Bhatt, producer-director
Along with Juhi Chawla, Pooja was among the first from the contemporary lot of actresses to turn to film production. She is getting set to direct her first film, after her latest production Jism did well at the box-office.

Pooja is a bright and talented woman with a mind of her own. Hopefully, it will be reflected in the film she directs.

Farha Khan, director
The ace choreographer is making her directorial debut with Main Hoon Na, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan, Amrita Rao and Suniel Shetty. And she is getting the right kind of buzz. If she proves as good a director as she is choreographer, Farah will go far.

Honey Irani, director
One of the best writers in the business, this former child star is Javed Akhtar's ex-wife and Farhan's (Dil Chahta Hai) and waiting-in-the-wings director Zoya's mother. Honey is coming into her own with a multi-starcast film, Armaan, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta and Gracy Singh.

Meenakshi Sharma, writer
Govind Nihalani gives her credit for writing a script with a subject that has never been attempted before. For young Meenakshi, who has been assisting Nihalani, Dev -- starring Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri, Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan -- is a dream debut.

Vibha Singh, writer
Her work as dialogue writer in Sur was noticed and even nominated for an award. Vibha is in the thick of the Bollywood jungle, having written dialogues for Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne, Sandhya and Footpath. She is presently working on more scripts.

Shona Urvashi, director
Producer Gul Anand's niece is directing her first feature film, Chupke Se, starring Zulfi Syed, Masumi, Rati Agnihotri, Om Puri and Tinnu Anand. The film, a love story between two very diverse people, promises to be fresh and different.

Nirja Shah, producer
Having worked on everything from television to editing Elle to events, Nirja is finally making use of her film education as head of X-over (read Crossover) Films. Their first film, produced by Milind Soman and directed by Parvati Balagopalan, titled Rules: Pyar Ka Superhit Formula, has wrapped up shooting. She has a few more 'exciting' projects in development.

Parvati Rajagopalan, director
Director of the Milind Soman produced Rules: Pyar Ka Superhit Formula, Parvati brings her television experience (Margarita, Hubahu) into feature filmmaking. Rules, which stars Milind and new find Meera Vasudevan, promises to break formula rules.

Priya Singh Paul, producer-director
After a decade or so in television, Priya Singh Paul makes her feature film debut with The Perfect Husband, starring Neha Dubey, Parvin Dabas, Rajeshwari Sachdev and Pawan Malhotra.

The film was appreciated on the festival circuit and will be released worldwide a few months later

Fowzia Fathima, cinematographer
After winning awards and accolades for her work in Revathy's Mitr: My Friend, Fowzia made her Bollywood debut with Ekta Kapoor's Kucch To Hai. The film may not have done well, but Fowzia's work was noticed and appreciated. She has a flourishing career ahead of her.
